I've Been Thinking About Vata Season
Yes, I've been thinking about Vata Season...
What the heck does that mean? In the ancient tradition of Ayurveda, there are three "seasons of the year that correspond to nature's energy of that time period. Vata Season is where we are now (think Fall and Early Winter), representing the elements of Air and Ether (space). I like to think of it as the winds of change, dying off of old patterns, creative ideas abound. Some say that this is the main transitional time of the year. That all being said, how do we move through this gracefully and with the most ease? Well we can embrace this great time of change while best keeping ourselves in balance. The way we balance according to Ayurveda is by bringing in opposite qualities. So here we can think warmth, grounding, and nurturing in our activities & habits and in our food. Eat: warm soups and stews, root vegetables. Environment/Daily Life: staying warm and perhaps getting plenty of sleep to align with the natural day/night cycles. Habits: following a consistent routine of working/eating/activities at the same time each day. Listen to yourself and Mother Nature to feel what exactly you need during this time. But the beauty in all of this: we can delight in the energies of creativity and change!
… There's a little a joke amongst my fiance and friends ~ I personally used struggle with Vata Season every year, especially when I first moved from sunny Southern California (where the season changes are mild). I would get sick, feel out of balance, my skin was a disaster, I travelled too much, fell out of routine, etc. Knowing all of this would potentially happen, in the first year I was living with Tim, I wrote a note to myself on the fridge: Think about Vata Season. About a week later, Tim and I are chatting and he says to me "So I've been thinking about Vata Season". And I said, "Oh yeah, do you even know what Vata Season is?" And we laughed and laughed and I explained to him all about my silly note. And every time one of my friends and I are in chaos, still to this day, we love to blame blame blame Vata Season!
